How to read it
- Plants, jobs and pay. U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023 and 2019, by six-digit NAICS industry. Jobs are paid employees in the pay period including March 12; pay is annual payroll over employees, current dollars. Census withholds some state cells to protect individual firms; those states show as blank.
- Named sites. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO): active facilities coded to each industry, with Toxics Release Inventory and Greenhouse Gas Reporting flags, compliance status and five-year penalties. The registry includes small permitted sites, so its counts run differently from Census plants.
- The fourteen. Transformers; switchgear; motors and generators; relays and controls; wire and cable; turbines; air and gas compressors; pumps; industrial valves; storage batteries; primary batteries; semiconductors and solar cells; iron and steel mills; copper rolling and wire.
- Factories coming. Rhodium Group and MIT's Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research, Clean Investment Monitor, August 2026 release, manufacturing facilities: announced capital by status and estimated actual spending by quarter. Licensed CC BY 4.0.
- Refresh. Rebuilt each quarter; Census adds a year each spring and EPA's registry is read fresh each edition.
